What is Milk Thistle?
Milk thistle is part of the daisy family. It is a flowering plant native to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The distinctively shaped leaves look as if they are splashed with white milk, thus the name. Alternatively, it may also be called St. Mary’s thistle.
Forms of Milk Thistle
Milk thistle is available in a variety of forms and doses depending on the desired effect.
- Capsules – Capsules are ideal for individuals who do not want to spend the time or effort to prepare the milk thistle themselves.
- Extracts and Tinctures – Made by diluting the milk thistle in alcohol, this form is typically taken up to three times a day in doses between 1 and 2 ml.
- Seed – The seeds of milk thistle can be finely ground and then used to brew tea. The residue is then strained rather than consumed with the tea. The seeds can also be taken by mouth without additional preparation.
Milk Thistle Uses
Milk thistle has traditionally been used as a natural remedy for liver ailments including cirrhosis, gallbladder problems, hepatitis, and jaundice. However, natural health advocates believe it may also be used to successfully address other health issues as well such as lowering cholesterol, treating type 2 diabetes, increasing the production of breastmilk and treating cancer of the breast, cervix, and prostate.
